How to Make Non-Toxic Cleaning Products at Home

Because your home should feel safe not like a science experiment

Hey mama,
I want to share something that’s been on my heart. For years, I cleaned our home with whatever products were on sale, those colorful bottles with promises like “spring breeze” or “kills 99.9% of germs.” I never really thought to question it. I assumed if it was on the shelf, it must be fine, right?

But once I had kids (and a dog who thinks the kitchen floor is a buffet), I started looking into what was actually in those products. And honestly? It was eye-opening. Many of them contained harsh chemicals linked to skin irritation, hormone disruption, respiratory issues, and even long-term health risks. That “fresh lemon” smell? Often just synthetic fragrance made from unknown chemicals. Not something I wanted lingering in my baby’s nursery.

That’s when I started learning about non-toxic cleaning. It began with just one homemade cleaner—and quickly turned into a whole new way of taking care of our home.

Why Non-Toxic Cleaning Matters

Conventional cleaning products might do the job, but they can leave behind more than just a shine. Studies have shown that indoor air quality can actually be worse than outdoor air, partly because of chemical cleaners. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), many store-bought cleaners contain ingredients like ammonia, chlorine bleach, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, none of which belong near children or pets.

If you’ve got toddlers crawling on the floor or kiddos who love touching every surface and then putting their hands in their mouths (mine sure did!), this is especially important. Even small changes, like switching out just one or two products can lower your family’s exposure to irritants and toxins.

And honestly? It feels good knowing exactly what’s in the products you’re using.

Simple Ingredients You Already Have

Here’s the good news: making your own cleaners doesn’t require a chemistry degree or fancy supplies. Most of what I use now was already in my pantry or medicine cabinet.

Here’s my basic toolkit:

  • White vinegar: Cuts grease, disinfects, and deodorizes naturally.

  • Baking soda: Gentle scrubber and odor neutralizer.

  • Castile soap: A plant-based liquid soap that’s safe and multipurpose.

  • Essential oils: Not just for scent many have antibacterial or antifungal properties. (Lemon, lavender, and tea tree are my go-tos.)

  • Water: Distilled is best for storage, but tap works just fine.

Glass or BPA-free spray bottles: Labeling them makes everything easier (and prettier).

4 Easy Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes

These are the actual recipes I use around our house. Nothing complicated just practical, mom-tested formulas that work.

1. All-Purpose Surface Cleaner

For counters, tables, and high-touch spots
You’ll need:

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup water

15 drops essential oil (I love lemon + lavender together)
How to use: Mix in a spray bottle and shake before each use.
Note: Don’t use on marble or granite, vinegar can be too harsh for natural stone.

2. Streak-Free Glass Spray

Perfect for windows, mirrors, and even the car windshield
You’ll need:

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 cup vinegar
1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol (optional, but helps with shine)

How to use: Shake and spray. Wipe with a microfiber cloth or newspaper for best results.

3. Fizzy Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Because even toilets deserve love
You’ll need:

  • ½ cup baking soda

  • 10 drops tea tree oil

¼ cup vinegar (added after baking soda)
How to use: Sprinkle the baking soda and oil in the bowl, then pour in vinegar. Let it fizz, scrub, and flush.

4. Natural Carpet Deodorizer

Great for pet smells, bedrooms, or that mysterious kid funk
You’ll need:

  • 1 cup baking soda

10-15 drops of lavender or eucalyptus oil
How to use: Mix and store in a jar. Sprinkle on carpets, wait 15–30 minutes, then vacuum.

A Few Tips I’ve Learned Along the Way

  • Label your bottles. I use masking tape and a Sharpie, nothing fancy.

  • Store in a cool, dark place. Essential oils can break down in heat or sunlight.

Let your kids help. Shaking bottles and picking scents makes it fun for them and it’s a great way to teach healthy habits early.

Real Talk: You Don’t Have to Do It All

This isn’t about being perfect. I still buy certain store-bought items, and that’s okay. What matters is making some changes that feel good for your family. Swapping even one cleaner is a step toward a healthier, more mindful home.

Making your own products can feel overwhelming at first but I promise, it gets easier. Start small. Try one recipe. See how it feels. You might even find that your home smells fresher, your head feels clearer, and you breathe a little easier (literally and figuratively).

We’re all just doing the best we can for our families.
You’ve got this, mama.

Bonus Tip:
If you’re curious about which essential oils are best for cleaning, I share my top choices right here. They’ve made such a difference in how our home smells and feels.

Let’s keep our homes safe, one spray bottle at a time.
